Evita - Like An Ocean We Rise Again artwork A successful turn away from the metalcore genre

The UK music scene is one to envy, as it has been the starting point for some of the most famous trends in metal history, good and bad. There was the NWOBHM, and there was even metalcore. Metalcore has actually become a bit of a joke lately, due to its waning popularity and its ties to the emo sub-culture. So bands are experimenting with the metalcore structure, and adding new elements into the sound seems to be the new trend for bands that want to separate themselves from the now defunct genre.

Evita, hailing from Bristol in the UK are for all accounts and purposes a metalcore band. They blend heavy, roared verses with clean sung 'emo' choruses on their debut EP Like An Ocean We Rise Again. But some credit has to be given to the band, as they have used much more extreme, guttural growls in the place of the standard hardcore vocals, which often sound like the squealing of a pig. The guitar work has obviously taken a tip from Shadows Fall, as their use of fast lead guitar with cutting riffs is reminiscent of the post-hardcore band. Clean vocals are implemented in some songs such as Monroe Fakes It All, and these are unforgivable as they ruin the attitude and energy of what was shaping up to be a brilliant song for fans of absolute extremity. Lap Dance Girl is handled much better, as the clean vocals are still present, but they are buried behind a wall of heavy rhythm and bass, making them less dominating. It's great to hear a vocalist with such a great range of vocal styles, and Aaron Beider even sounds like Children Of Bodoms' Alexi Laiho in Beyond The Rising Sun.

This band is a hard one for me to rate. Although they still have a strong metalcore structure to their songs, they have distanced themselves with some great extreme effects that put them almost in a genre of their own. It is a shame when the clean vocals come into the foreground and ruin the extremity of the album, but otherwise this is something worth checking out. I'm guessing the songs would also be great to hear live.
